So after many hours researching, I have narrowed my hotel choices to the Grand Millenium by the Asoke BTS station or the Plaza Athenee by the Phloen Chit BTS station. Is there a certain section on Sukhumvit Road that is more safe and less shady? We want to be close to the nightlife but still be able to retreat somewhere that is less crowded and noisy. Also we would prefer an area where we can walk out of the hotel and find many different restaurants.
Please let me know your suggestions!
Thanks everyone!
So conflicted about area!
Athenee is a great hotel, close to malls, skytrain, and round the back is Soi Lang Suan with lots of eateries and bars, the area is more upmarket. Asoke is also fine if you avoid Soi Cowboy. Bangkok is pretty safe even in red light areas.

At night, keep with the crowds, keep your head, don%26#39;t close up bars, and you will be fine.
Given the choice I would opt for the Plaza Athenee. It is very expensive, but if you can afford the tariff, I think it wins hands down. Very handy to everything as well.
Soi Cowboy is probably one of the safest areas to be around actually as Police have a vested interest in the area anyhow. On the other hand Asoke BTS is a 5 minute walk up the road from Millenium and junction of road there can be a bit daunting to cross next to Exchange Tower and Sukumvit if you don%26#39;t know it.
i have never felt scared /intimidated in bangkok and have gone with my husband into many bars around soi cowboy and had a great time.
i can honestly say london and new york are tons more intimidating , you will have a great time regardless.
I personally prefer the river hotels but that is me.
I suspect problems in thailand are if you are stupid and look for them for most its a great holiday experience.

not really a problem you can cross using the Asoke BTS or subway station.
Thanks everyone. In your opinion, which hotel is more convenient (walking distance) to a wide selection of restaurants?
none at the level you are looking at. bangkok has it all but not next to each other the river end is my choice,
