Connection query BKK to CNX

For the first time ever I am flying in to Bangkok from Singapore, and then on to Chiang Mai rather than my historical route from KL or Honkers.

I have not purchased the Chiang Mai flight yet as will have a different carrier for that leg. Not worried about paying more at Suvarnabhumi Airport as long as a seat is available. I just don%26#39;t really want to book teh onwards flight yet as I have never done this route before.

My queries are...if I book a onwards flight now do I have to clear Immigration at Suvarnabhumi Airport or can I stay in transit and clear immigration at Chiang Mai.

Given that I am uncertain as to how long I will have to wait for bags and stuff, if I purchase the onwards ticket to Chiang Mai at Suvarnabhumi Airport can I do this without clearing immigration? If not I guess I will have to allow more time to clear and get from one international arrivals to domestic departures.

Any advice would help. Thanks in advance.

the answer to your first question about clearing customs is that it depends on the onward carrier. If you are flying Thai or Bangkok Airways and (I am assuming you are flying Singapore into Sin) then you should be able to check through to Chiang Mai depending on the interlining agreement in place, Chiang Mai has imigration facilities so you can stay in transit, if you decide to use Air Asia then you will have to clear customs pick up your baggage and recheck in at Bangkok. You will also have to have booked the onward flight before the you arrive for the first option to be possible. Luggage can take a while to appear at Bangkok, I think all the ticket desks are landside in departures, so you would have to exit arrivals take the lift or escalators up to level 4 and check in (or buy your ticket)

Hi,

You cannot be ';in transit'; without FIRST having a confirmed onward ticket-- there ARE airline desks inside the arrivals area (transit desk) just after deplaning, but they do not sell new tickets at these locations- it%26#39;s only for transit activities (like checking in, onward seat assignment and changes).

It takes about :40 to :60 to exit the airport-- this is from the time you step off your aircraft until you%26#39;re outside of the Customs Hall.. These estimates assume that you do NOT have to apply for a formal Visa on Arrival and/or that you do not encounter any ';issues'; at either Passport or Customs Control.

On the 4th floor-- the departures level-- most all airlines have a combination customer service/ticket desk where you can buy tickets.. The actual check-in areas are for just that- check-in and you%26#39;ll need to have your ticket issued prior to getting into line.

Once you clear Customs you can simply go upstairs to the departure level and check any of the large departures monitor to see who has a upcoming flight to CNX and inquire with the specific airline about buying seat on that flight.

Travel Safe,
