Loved Thailand - jungles, friendly happy people, delightful food, and lots of adventures too. We were in Chiang Mai, it was very easy to travel from there. We want to go somewhere new over the Christmas period. My Husband is keen on Vietnam but I have heard some discouraging tales. Could anyone please give me some ideas of where to go next? Thanks so much.
Loved Thailand so much - where next?Cambodia - Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (Angkor Wat Temples)
Loved Thailand so much - where next?Laos?
Given the chance you should not miss Angkor Wat, one of the great wonders of the ancient world.
As for Vietnam, Hanoi is a beautiful city well worth a visit, but hotels are both expensive (by Thailand standard) and overpriced. And the Vietnamese are world leaders in scamming visitors...
Hi Lizz,
Come visit Laos. Be prepared for less amenities than Thailand but it offers a lot of %26#39;old world charm%26#39; that is quickly disappearing in SEA with mass tourism. If you liked Chiang Mai for it%26#39;s Lanna temples, then visit Luang Prabang, the seat of the former royal Lane Xang kingdom.
For visiting old ruins, Angkor is an archaeological wonder and should not be missed.
Or if time and budget permits, visit all of former Indochina.
While weather-wise, Bali experiences some significant rain in Dec/Jan, it%26#39;s also a great destination to visit, but perhaps during a better season.
not a great fan of vietnam personally.we loved the relaxed vibe of luang prabang laos.you can fly from chaing mai.probably 1 week in that area should do it.we loved singeapore as well and personally didnt find it the super modern metropolis that others do .we found loads of character and local colour and great cheap indian food staying in little india and loads of things to do as well though you will certainly spend more money in singapore than chaing mai..
You could consider Malaysia.
I love Thailand but I also love Cavelossim, South Goa - We are going back to Thailand for 5 weeks this Xmas but we have spent the last 4 Xmas in Goa.
The Goans are so very nice - very little crime. They are mainly Christian so Xmas is especially good - nativity scenes in all the villages. It is very much a third world country and people do tend to get Delho Belly ( we take Probiotic tablets and have been quite fortunate).
Although we had originally booked to go to Thailand last Xmas, the airport was closed and so we had to rearrange to go back to Cavelossim - Xmas day found us eating lobster on the beach from a beach shack and the dolphins came to play just 80 feet from where we were. - paradise.
I am dreading having to write to all the Goans who have become friends over the years to tell them that we will not be coming this year!!!
Have a look on the %26#39;Asia%26#39; %26#39;India%26#39; %26#39;South Goa%26#39; forum here on Tripadvisor.
yes good tip ,south goa is indeed very nice ,perfect over xmas, good beaches ,cheap prices ,great food..
sri lanka is also a great country ,very safe now ,great for a cultural ,scenery type of holiday ,a few good beaches too way down south,no visa required..
Where to go next? mmmmm
Now have you ever been to Australia?
Out on the patio we’d sit
And the humidity we’d breathe
We’d watch the lightning crack over cane fields
Laugh and think, this Australia
New Years Eve Sydney Harbour
Beaches that go on forever
Forests and Mountains that are blue yes blue
Deserts that are red
Rock Paintings that are 40,000 years old
And the language isn’t that difficult
inaspin
...or you could come to JAPAN, but your money won%26#39;t get you much these days...
