where would the nearest place be to spend a weekend away fro phuket to get a further 30 day visa? Would malasia or singapore be he most interestig? Thanks

The nearest place is Ranong in Myanmar. There are minibuses that do it in a day trip.

Easiest is KL, fly Air Asia.

For a weekend, Firefly Airline to Penang.

Singpore would be fine too, just further away and more expensive to stay there.

if you do the Ranong option you will only get 15 days, you have to arrive back on an airplane to get a further 30 days so KL or Sin are better options

It also depends on the visa you arrive into Thailand with. As I recall you were going to contact the Royal Thai Consulate to discuss which best suited you for your proposed 3 month holiday, either 30 day Visa exemption with your passport or a non-immigrant type 0 with or without doing any volunteer work, with ensuinfg work permit requirements. That will determine how often and when you will need to have your visa renewed.
