can i use an inactive cell phone with a Thai sim card?

I%26#39;m not sure I can buy and install a new sim card in my iphone to use in Thailand. Does anyone know if I can use an old cell phone which is inactive for this purpose?

Hi,

New or old- doesn%26#39;t matter.. so long as:

1) It%26#39;s unlocked and/or can accept any SIM card, and

2) It operates on one of the GSM bands in Thailand.

Just because it%26#39;s ';inactive'; doesn%26#39;t necessarily make it %26#39;unlocked%26#39;. You%26#39;d have to check with the carrier or manufacturer to see.

As it seems you are from the USA, then more than likely your old cellphone is locked to the US network that you got it from. And unless it was labeled as an ';international'; phone when you got it, it may not work on the Thai frequencies, as the US networks operate on different gsm frequencies.

If it is a tri-band or quad-band phone, then bring it with you and the mobile shop here in Thailand can probably unlock it.

Your iPhone is most definitely locked to the AT%26amp;T network.

Hi;

The solution is quite simple for using cell phone in Bangkok.

Leave the old cell phone in your home country USA. Just buy a used

cell phone and install new SIM card for Bangkok use.

This may be the easy and cheap ways and you can always have

the local cell phone for the future visits .

OR....bring your old phone from the states and if they can%26#39;t get it to work, throw it away and buy a cheap phone here that will work in the States when you get home.
