None of those areas are suitable for you.

Put your hand in your pocket, pull out a few baht, and pay someone to move you around during your stay.

Thailand is not a place to learn to ride. Besides the obvious safety issue, there are also rental scams and ticket traps to contend with.

But, if you feel you must, I would pick Chiangmai.

Hi,

And I%26#39;ll be the third to agree.. It may seem like a fun thing to do-- and it is fun-- but this place is, for the most part, not a place that you want to be a ';novice';.. It%26#39;s not so much just because you%26#39;re a novice per se, but combine that with some drivers who use less-than legal driving habits, traffic/roadway issues and navigation/right of way issues... it%26#39;s a recipe for an accident..

Travel Safe,

many westerners die in scooter accidents in thailand every year ,no place for a novice rider..

HI

I agree with all

unless you are an excellent motorcylclist and drive very defensively

let someone drive youi and enjoy your vacation

thailand drives on the opposite side of the road as we do in USA.

I don%26#39;t know how many times when I was first driving I turned onto the wrong side of the road.

granted i only ride in Issan near my wifes village but it is a jolt when you see a truck barreling down on you in your lane.. then you realize you are in the wrong lane.

I have also found the thai%26#39;s think the rule or laws of the roads are more of a suggestion.. than a must do

The words novice scooter rider and Bangkok should not even be used in the same sentance. ! LOL

NOT in Bangkok.

Phuket ok if you stick to the beach area. DO NOT do the twisty uphil/downhill bits between phuket down and the ebaches.

Chiang Mai, not recommended.

Basically not recommended if you have never riden in your life.

If you do, wear a helmet, a real helmet, not those plastic ballcaps.

Never pass on the inside of a car/bus/truck!!!

When I 1st arrive I was told that the buses and trucks ';eat ppl/scooters';. And I have seen motosys getting eaten afew times :(
