Chiang Mai or Siem Reap?

We%26#39;re going to Thailand for our honeymoon in June and so far decided we%26#39;re staying 3 nights in both Chiang Mai and Siem Reap. We have an extra day now in Thailand and want to decide whether we stay that extra night in Chiang Mai or Siem Reap. Suggestions? We%26#39;re staying at Le Meridien in Siem Reap and most likely The Chedi in Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai or Siem Reap?

In 3 nights you can get a good taste of Siem Reap and the temples, I think there is more variety in and around Chiang Mai for your extra day to be better spent there, don%26#39;t get me wrong, Siem Reap is a wonderful place, but if you only have a limited interest in archaeology, then you may run out of things to do

Chiang Mai or Siem Reap?

I agree with paulosussex , stay the extra day in Chiang mai.

Hi,

my vote also goes to Chiang Mai!

Siem Reap is all about wats, but to be honest in our 3 days stay there, there were only 4 ';unmissable'; temples IMHO (Angkor Thom, Ta Phrom, Banteay Srei and of course Angkor Wat). The others are also grand, but pale in comparision. However, it was still kind of fun to find your favourite hidden-gem-temple while wandering around (ours was Eastern Mebon). 3 days in Siem Reap is ideal to see the highlights and exploring the area. Siem Reap, though very touristy, is a pleasant place. However at the afternoon of day 4 we were templed out.

Chiang Mai is more diverse and more fun. Shopping is also better than Siem Reap and less in your face (especially souvenirs and ';cheaps';). If you haven%26#39;t thought about taking a cooking class, consider it on your extra day, great fun. Other than it, there are tons of different activities and sights in Chiang Mai and around.

I am leaving next week for our quick trip.

On this trip we will be spending 5 days in Siem Reap and 3 in Chiang Mai

When we get back I will post a report and try to remember to try to give you an answer to this question.

PS We also went to Siem Reap on our Honeymoon and this is our first trip back since then.

Congrats and good luck with the wedding

Another vote for Chiang Mai - and do try to be there on a Sunday, as the afternoon/evening walking street market is unique.

Shirasam:

Spend the extra day in Chiang Mai. We had 4 days in Siem Reap, but after 2 days at the temples we were ';templed out.'; The remaining two days we spent at the market and trying varying resturants and spas, all of which are better in Chiang Mai. If I had the extra day, I%26#39;d definitely spend it in Chiang Mai.
