Yipeng Loi Krathong Festival 2009

I have been given different dates for this festival ranging from he 28th October through to the 3rd November. I know the festival is over a few days but what I really want to find out is, what events are held when during this festival. In particular we want to make sure we see the release of the lanterns into the sky. It looks like an awesome event. Can anyone help us?

Loy Krathong day this year is 2 November. I suggest a search of TA forum as this exact same question has been answered previously.

Dragon - actually the question hasn%26#39;t been definitively answered in the other thread (I%26#39;ve been following several threads as we%26#39;ll be in Chiang Mai during that time as well). Our various Chiang Mai experts have come back with a variety of dates ranging from October 24th for the Lantern release to October 28th to a wait and see approach. I%26#39;ve ran several searches through trip advisor and google and have been unable to find any real schedule such as the one that was released last year.

The big balloon launch in Sansai is not happening this year. It would have been on Oct 24th, but was canceled due to swine flu paranoia. Hopefully next year.

Here in Chiang Mai city, there will hundreds of fire balloons floating skyward most every night from around the 31st until the 2nd, with smaller quantities before and after. While the Sansai launch is the most spectacular mass launch, seeing the CM skies filled with floating lights is pretty awesome too.

I have not seen a written schedule yet, but imagine the parade will be on the 2nd, with evening activities such as concerts %26amp; dances on the evenings preceding.

I%26#39;ve found a detailed hourly schedule of events in Sukhothai, but nothing in Chiang Mai. What%26#39;s with the CM Tourism Department?

My sister and I plan to be in Chiang Mai on the Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Unfortunately, we will miss the big parades on Nov. 2 and 3 because of commitments here at home. Is it still worth it to go just on the the Oct. 31 and Nov. 1? What events can we expect on those days?

Finally something definitive! Thank you!
